OECMs
Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation in Malawi through Other Effective Conservation Measures
In preparation
Setting up a network of Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) covering at least 100,000 hectares of ecologically and culturally important land.
OECMs are places outside protected areas that still conserve nature in the long term, such as community forests, sacred sites and well-managed landscapes. This project will establish and run a network of them in Malawi.
It aims to benefit about 20,000 local residents, with women making up half of the participants, while improving biodiversity protection, ecosystem services and the resilience of community livelihoods.
The Environmental Affairs Department is the executing partner. The project concept was approved by the Global Environment Facility on 19 November 2025.
