Malawi’s first full assessment of its environment in 15 years looks at land, forests, water, air quality and biodiversity.

On World Environment Day, 5 June 2026, the Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Patricia Wiskes, launched the National State of the Environment and Outlook Report in Lilongwe. It is Malawi’s first comprehensive assessment of its environment in 15 years.

The report looks at the condition of land, forests, water resources, air quality and biodiversity, and highlights emerging challenges, including deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss and the effects of climate change. It was compiled by 64 experts from academic institutions, research organisations and technical fields.

The report is meant to inform policy, climate adaptation strategies and conservation programmes.
