The Framework makes the Environmental Affairs Department the single entry point for all carbon trading projects in Malawi.

The Government has launched Malawi’s National Carbon Market Framework in Lilongwe. It sets out how Malawi takes part in carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and in the voluntary carbon market, to secure climate finance and drive green investment.

Under the Framework, the Environmental Affairs Department is the Designated National Authority and the single entry point for all carbon trading projects. Every carbon project must register in the Malawi Carbon Registry System. Existing projects were given 90 days to comply with the new rules.

“This Framework has not been designed to threaten or scare investors, but rather to solidify our collaboration,” said the then Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hon. Owen Chomanika.
